Best of '17 : Movies
This year was filled with many unforgettable obsessions including Fenty beauty, all the memes, and other things I’m too lazy to mention. But, this is just a list of my top favorite movies I discovered this year and HOPE someone will watch or put some on their watch list. Hope you love. P.S they are in no specific order.
Okja made me cry. Okja made me want to stay vegan, and Okja made me appreciate Jake Gyllenhaal’s acting. This movie is on Netflix still or maybe they took it off because it was too amazing, not sure. I won’t spoil anything but I think animal lovers will enjoy this movie a lot. Meat eaters, well, you don’t give a shit lol
It does have a happy ending…or does it? Just watch it and find out!
Pans Labyrinth (2006)
I only got to see this movie because of my cute boyfriend mentioning it to me (teehee). Yes, sometimes you need friends to open your eyes to see what you’re missing. The girl in this movie was so amazing. What’s also amazing is that a Mexican wrote and directed this movie and it is said to be one of the best dark fantasy movies of all time. I wish there could be more foreign artists to get famous because I literally went through a list of “genius” directors and they were mostly all white males who have had some kind of disgusting scandal and I really can’t get myself to continue supporting any creators like them. Also, Guillermo Del Toro is involved with many great movies and has created amazing things. Apparently he has a monster museum in Canada, not 100% sure though. Anyway, this movie also made me cry in the end and made me believe in the after life. This movie has that much power over me lol
Pure Love (2016)
Pure love is a South Korean film about a group of friends and a cute girl with “problem” shh I don’t want to spoil it for you. This is a movie that really makes you think about love, whether it’s love you feel romantically or love from a platonic friendship. This movie makes you want to hug more, love more and appreciate the ones closest to you more. I originally wanted to watch this movie because I loved Kim So-Hyun’s acting in School 2015 (Who Are You) and I heard a lot of good things about EXO’s D.O’s acting skills. I also thought they looked so cute together and what I love most about movies with a potential love story is if the actors look cute together or have some kind of chemistry. This movie made me cry, so I think that‘s all I need to say to convince you to watch it. The trailer doesn’t do this movie justice, you will fall in love with all the characters in this instantly. Plus, subtitles are available on dramafever or kissasian!
I didn’t think this movie would be so sad, but also really amazing. The fact that this movie is based on a true story is really amazing but sad and scary. I’m just glad it was sort of a happy ending. The only problem with this movie was the love story, it was really unnecessary and cheesy, I really wanted to skip over all those romantic parts because it just took away from the good parts of the movie. The baby(not a baby but he looks like a cute baby) is so cute and his name is Sunny Pawar. Apparently he’s in another movie called Love Sonia, I will check it out hopefully he has a lot of lines lol. Please watch this because Sunny literally made this movie, it would be nothing without him, and Saroo who is the reason this movie exists.
Todays Kira Kun (2017)
This is a Japanese movie with a really ugly trailer. This is not just about them kissing and being lovey-dovey all the time! Please watch at least the first 5 minutes and see if you like it or not. This summer I kind of went on a Jdrama rampage since I just came to Mexico with nothing in mind other than doing basic tourist stuff. I started to catch up on some anime and drama’s and stumbled over this movie. Without even seeing the trailer first, I saw this and I fell in love the story. The acting wasn’t cheesy, plus their was no forced chemistry. The girls character was so awkward in the beginning it was gross but she’s so cute and seemed so much like a cartoon character that I wanted to see more of her. This one is unforgettable and I can watch it over and over again. I love movies like this where the lead is a girl and the boy is kind of a supporting actor, although he’s not, he should be because I needed more of her lol
Kimi Ni Todoke (2010)
Sorry for the low quality but you can easily find this movie on kissasian or maybe even dramafever and it looks great (I think I saw the whole movie on youtube *wink *wink). Anyways, I started to watch the anime version of this movie but stopped due to a busy schedule and later found the live action of it randomly. I saw this since movies are just an hour or two and anime series take maybe a week for me to finish. I loved this movie more than I expected since there’s more of a friendship story to it with girls and not much of a love story which I don’t see much in dramas.
I loved this movie because it I like anime that is different and nothing like every single other anime that’s out. This one is about a girl who is bullied by a boy for something she can’t control. That’s kind of something serious in the real world, so it’s great that it’s in this movie. The bully is then faced with consequences for his actions, which we need more of. The movie is sad but I still recommend it if you want to cry, but also be happy?
Parts of this movie were very sad too, but still was interesting and creative. From only seeing the trailer, you can’t really tell how amazing it actually is.
Honorable mentions: Silenced (2011) is a movie about a teacher who uncovers the awful corrupt dark side of the school he recently started teaching at. It’s a very sad true story so please keep that in mind and maybe do a google search on the film before watching since it could be triggering. Train to Busan (2016) is a very well made zombie movie. I almost cried because one of (many) characters died and he was like a family member to me lol. It’s bloody so keep that in mind! These were two very different movies and both happen to have the same lead actor who did an amazing job in both. El Orfanato / The Orphanage (2007) is a horror drama thriller that really creeped me out and usually scary movies are annoying and just jump scares so I hardly give them any thought. This movie really spooked me but it also has a heartfelt story to it? I kind of forgot how it went but it was scary and I can’t watch it alone to give a better summary. Also, Guillermo Del Toro produced it and it’s in Spanish yet it is a really popular horror movie. Thor: Ragnarok (2017) this movie was pretty funny and cool and it included a lot of p.o.c. As Expected from a director who’s an indigenous Polynesian. After watching this movie, I plan on watching his other movie Boy. It looks so good judging from the trailer. Coco (2017) I did a review of this movie if you want to read it here. I’ll say no more I’ve already said enough lol
I know I watched a lot more but these are the only ones I can really think of. I’ll be making more movie lists because I love so many, but I’ll leave you with this for now! If you would like you can add me on letterboxd!
